Their Story
Hanna Grobler – Actress, Visionary, and Heart Behind the Hanna Charity & Empowerment Foundation
Hanna Grobler, a celebrated South African actress with an Honours Degree in Drama, is well known for her performances in numerous local films and television series. Yet, it’s her role off-screen that has truly set her apart—as the passionate Managing Director of the Hanna Charity & Empowerment Foundation.
Operating in thirteen communities across Pretoria, Johannesburg, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and Cape Town, the foundation has become a powerful force for good under Hanna’s leadership. Her journey in philanthropy began long before fame, rooted deeply in her upbringing. “Helping others is something I believe you’re born with—an understanding of their needs,” she says. “I inherited that insight from my mother, Marietjie, a social worker. Even while studying drama at Stellenbosch University, I found myself drawn to helping street children. It’s always been part of my life.”
After returning to her hometown of Pretoria, Hanna began handing out food and clothes from the boot of her car. “I was struck by how great the need truly was in our country. I started hosting concerts at my home to raise funds for soup kitchens in Elandspoort, west of Pretoria.” Her grassroots efforts quickly grew. Within just three years, she established a registered non-profit organization in March 2008.
Today, the Hanna Charity & Empowerment Foundation supports nearly 6,000 people with the help of a dedicated team and committed volunteers. Their wide-reaching initiatives include soup kitchens, clothing banks, educational programs, libraries, after-school care, early childhood development, skills training, and life enrichment workshops.
Hanna reflects on her mission: “Charity is my calling—it’s my life’s purpose. I’m constantly thinking of ways to build a better future for those in need. It’s not always easy; sometimes the challenges feel impossible. But somehow, everything always works out exactly as it should.”
